Each and every one of us will have our own ideas and definitions about what success means to us. Success is a very personal thing and different for each and every one of us. I won’t attempt to define success but what I am offering is, what I think are the three key elements which I’ve coined the ABC of Success; Action, Belief and Commitment.

A is for Action

Without action nothing will happen and nothing changes. I believe imperfect action is definelty better than no action at all. Let’s face it we could all be waiting forever for the perfect moment. Waiting for inspiration, permission, reassurance that its okay- that we’re good enough, more confidence, absence of risk…the list could go on. Sometime we just have to take the bull by the horns. I like to think that it is true, that God ultimately does favour the brave!

Taking action also builds momentum. It’s a bit like a trying to push a broken car at the side of the road. At first it takes a massive, all-mighty push to get it moving, but once you are past the initial resistance, momentum builds and you don’t have to push half as hard.

As the quote goes; success is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration.

And you have to be prepared to put in the effort and take direct MASSIVE action.

Next is B for Belief

I hope most people will agree how essential having belief and faith is

As Henry Ford said, “If you believe you can or you believe you can’t then you’re probably right.”

We become what we believe ourselves to be.

We all hold certain beliefs about ourselves. Whether it be about our skills, our capabilities, beliefs about who and what type of person we are. Sometimes these beliefs do hold us back and limit us from being all that we could possibly be. As we all know humans actually only use about 15% of their potential. Everyone could be much more than they are and our very own beliefs, although serving us, keeping us safe actually do inhibit and do us, sometimes a disservice.

If you look back in history all people who accomplished great things, they all had one thing in common and that’s self-belief.

Take Roger Barrister who was the first man to run a mile in under 4 minutes. What made him different from all the other people who said it was physically impossible? He had utter belief and faith in himself. He used the power of belief to achieve one of the biggest successes, perhaps in sporting history. In his mind he had visualised himself successfully breaking the 4 min barrier many times over. Belief also explains how soon after 16 more people successfully broke the 4 minute barrier. This illustrates clearly how it wasn’t a physical barrier but a psychological barrier…which is often what our beliefs are.

Lastly C if for Commitment

This is the motivation. Having the perseverance and discipline that’s needed to achieve what we set out to do. Because for us to all stay on course and not give in when the going gets tough, or when fears and doubts creep in we need to have commitment. We have to take responsibility and be prepared to commit to what we’ve set out to do regardless of the obstacles we might face.

Ask yourself, what are you committed to completing and achieving right now? Do you have the right level of commitment needed to deal with any obstacles and problems that might arise?

Yes I know this ABC of success is simplistic but I honestly believe that these three elements hold the key to our success. If you can achieve all three of these elements, Action, belief and commitment and maintain them then surely the sky’s the limit in terms of what you could actually achieve?

Do you hold the deep-seated belief that it takes a certain type of person to be truly creative? Perhaps you think you have to be particularly talented, artistic or highly intelligent to be creative?

Many of us have been socialised and educated into believing that creativity is a special quality, which you simply either have or haven’t. In modern times creativity has taken on an unearthly mystersism. Basically creativity has been put on a pedestal.

Here are the ten most common myths surrounding creativity. Do any of these resonate with your own thoughts, beliefs and attitudes about your own and other people’s creativity?

1) Only certain “types” of people are actually creative. For instance individuals who work in the arts. Musicians, artists, thespians and writers.

2) That creativity it is a quality that you either have or haven’t. Some people are simply born to be creative, whilst other individuals just simply aren’t.

3) If you haven’t been very creative up till now, by the time you reach adult life you are probably never going to be. Surley you would have been pursuing creative activities by now if you had a genuine interest and desire to be creative?

4) You have to be intelligent and clever. How can you be creative if you’re a rotten speller? Or if you can’t even draw?

To be creative you surely have to have a gift or talent.

5) Creativity is purely a pass-time associated with hobbies and leisure. It is just creative fluff….certainly not real work!

6) Being creativity is not a sensible activity. It certainly won’t pay the bills and it’s unrealistic to think you can make any sort of living from being creative.

7) It’s silly and frivolous, an undisciplined activity which is a waste of time.

8) Creativity is for certain types of people. Wacky types, zany, way out there people.

9) Being creativity is childs play! It’s something that we do when we’re young, but it’s just a stage we eventually grow out of it.

10) Creativity should be effortless. It shouldn’t have to be worked at. It should either come naturally, or not at all. You shouldn’t have to work at it.

Banksy’s real name is actually Robin Gunningham. He uses a pseudonym in an attempt to maintain his anonymity. Regardless, he has managed to achieve near mythical status. However, in the same vein Banksy has become fairly mainstream and commercial, due to his ever increasing popularity.

To some he is nothing more than an offensive, criminal low life vandal who flaunts the British law and order.

Can his work really claim to be ”art”?

Uncategorically I have to say a resounding - YES!!! In my opinion his art work is “art” on so many multi-faceted levels.

One of the great things about his work is that it attempts to challenge the narrow minded, linear definition of what we believe “art” should be. His work flys in the face of the arts world, and the establishment that surrounds it.

Banksy makes people question their lives, society and culture. After seeing his art work they sit up, stand up, pause for thought……….just think! This is “art” at it’s very best. Instead of just being ornate, beautiful or wacky, Banksy’s art work is powerfully thought provoking. He makes every day people stand, stop, stare and think about the world they actually live in.

“A lot of people never use their initiative because no-one ever told them to”

“Playing it safe will always end in disaster”

“Modern art is a disaster area. Never in the field of human history has so much been used by so many to say so little”

Banksy is not only an artist, he is also one of the greatest creative critics of contemporary society. He uses a clever and powerful medium, street art/graffiti to enable him convey his messages on mass, whether this be the streets of London, Brazil or where ever……..

The utter brilliance of Banksy’s work is that it is accessible to you, me, the next person. Whoever might happen to walk past, regardless of class, race, religion, wealth or interest in art. One of the fundamental problems of “art”, and by this I also include literature and the realms of the political world in my definition, they are generally open to only the middle or higher classes, due to opportunities, socialisation and education . Unfortunately the “common man” for a variety of reasons, such as limited education, opportunities and environment rarely have access to “art”. This is where Banksy’s work come into it’s own. Banksy’s work crosses boundaries as it has universal curb appeal. Even better he has a captive audience!

His work has led to a blurring of the lines between high and low culture. By using the medium of street graffiti he is able to get important societal messages out to people, who ordinarily would not visit art galleries, read broad sheets or watch current affairs program. That is the beauty of Banksy. His street art has the potential to educate the uneducated, stimulating thinking on issues such as politics, religion, war and social order. Often the messages his arts work conveys are messages his audience already knows, but I believe choose to ignore. They send out a stark message about the harsh realities of our modern day society, each piece hammers home some hard hitting home truisms. He is a modern day George Orwell.

An anarchist of the 21st century

His work is a paradox. Often very subtle, using satirical humour, and diverse contrasting images, which you would never normally see or put together. Take for instance his art piece depicting the US army helicopters sporting a pretty pink bow around the propeller! A simple touch but yet so effective, and funny on a range of different levels.

He stick two finger up to capitalism. Laughing in the face of the hypocrisy of our society. We need more creative thinkers, like him, who are clever and forward thinking enough to use a ready available medium to access a whole new generation of people. The young are much more likely to listen to someone like Banksy than some high brow arty type who only gets his or her work displayed in the Tate Modern! In this day and age if art is going to have a serious impact ”artists” need to be more creative and alternative in their approach.

“Think from outside the box. Collapse the box

and take a fucking sharp knife to it!”

“Advertising makes people feel inadequate and worthless. Graffiti doesn’t do that. Graffiti doesn’t emotionally blackmail you, graffiti doesn’t make you feel fat and graffiti doesn’t make you want to rush out and buy things - except maybe a high strength cleaning product”

“The people who run our cities don’t understand graffiti because they think nothing has the right to exist unless it makes a profit…
the people who truly deface our neighborhoods are the companies that scrawl giant slogans across buildings and buses trying to make us feel inadequate unless we buy their stuff….
any advertisement in public space that gives you no choice whether you see it or not is yours, it belongs to you, its yours to take, rearrange and re use.Asking for permission is like asking to keep a rock someone just threw at your head…. “

“Going through the emotions kills the emotion”

Let’s start by making it clear, we should try not to be influenced by conventions when it comes to being creativity. Often the more creative we wish to be, the less rules we restrict ourselves to, the better. People who live the most creative life’s, are most often the people who are willing to bend the rules and change them to suit their new circumstances and situtions. Yes we all needs rules and laws in society, but as times go by these rules can become outdated and restrictive. Creative people are not scared to challenge the rules and be a little different, even if this may seem strange, weird or unusual to others.

Thus rule number one………

1) Be prepared to take a risk

Do things a little differently to the crowd. Be your own person. Challenge how things have always been done. Could there be a better way of doing something? Do you have to live your life the same as everyone else? Could you be doing something that would make you happier? Sometimes we have to break the rules to make advancements. Otherwise we remain stuck and immobile.

Question things.

Have the courage to try something new or do something a different way.

Think outside the box.

As Banksy the artist, and in my opinion, a genius states “Think outside the box, collapse the box and take a fucking knive to it.” I love that quote.

2) Be prepared to look at a problem or an issue from a very different standpoint

By coming at a problem or question from a very different perspective we can often experience a breakthrough in our thinking. Coming up with an innovative solution that we perhaps would have never considered or thought of. Often it depends on the actual questions we ask as to what answers we actually come up with. This is very much in line with thinking outside of the box.

Roger Von Oech, in his book ”A Whack to the Side of the Head”, talks about asking “What If?” questions to stimulate our imaginations. Another suggestion is imagining how great leaders and thinkers in history would tackle a problem. For example, what kind of solutiions do you think Winston Churchill or Albert Eistein would come up with for your particular problem?

Sometimes we get stuck in linear thinking because we are too quick to label and name things. People can actually experience a shift in their thinking by using different words or names to decribe the problem. An illustration that Roger Von Oech gives is imagine designing an opening between two rooms in a house. If the architect thinks “door” then that is what she likely to design, where as if she thinks passage or tunnel she will probably design someting very different. ” Different words lead your thinking in differnet directrions and bring in different assumptions.” R. Oech 2008

3)Have fun and be playful

Why should children have all the fun and we adults get lumbered with all the seriousness and concerns of life? As we get older some of us lose our natural born ability to play and be light-hearted. We become rigid in our thinking and start to believe that we are too grown-up and mature for frivolities, such as play. Just look at some of the people who you might know through work. Think how serious they are, especially in a work environment. Surely people can be just as able to be productive at work but not take it all so seriously and have a bit of fun? The chances are if we allowed for more play and fun in the workplace we could actually be more productive and innovative!

Firstly humour stretches your thinking. If you laugh at something you are more likely to look at it in a new fresh way. “Those who approach life like a child playing a game, moving and pushing pieces, possess the power of kings.” Heraclitus, Philosopher

This philosophy is about playing around with ideas and possibilities until you come up with something. Having fun in work as well as play does work., People who enjoy what they do tend to think up more ideas and their creative juices are much more likely to flow.

Moral: There’s a close relationship between the “aha” of discovery and the “ha-ha” of humour.

4) Look for more than one answer or idea

Don’t just settle on the first solution or idea. It may not be the best one. Consider Thomas Edddison who invented the light bulb. He kept inventing, re-inventing, and trying out new ideas until he came up with “best” idea. Some people get fixated on an idea and because of this they will not consider any other possibilities. Why should they when they think their idea is best? However, if you fall in love with your own ideas you are likely to miss out on potentially some even better, more imaginative concepts.

Often we stagnate in our own rigid thinking.

I have always found that it’s good to get someone elses perpective on a problem. Sometimes they will view the problem very differently to you thus helping you see a problem in a whole new illuminating light. If people kept generating more ideas they may find that the 2nd, 3rd or even 4th idea may have been more innovative and a more workable solution. The more ideas you are able to generate the more likely you are to find a solution that is right for you. Dig Deeper!

5) Look for patterns and associations

This is how the human mind works. We are programmed to look for connections, patterns and similarities. Much of our thinking is associative. One idea leads to another idea, and that in turn make you think of another. It is good to look for patterns and connections, even when there doesn’t seem to be any obvious relationship between two things. R.Oech claims that much of what is called intelligence is our ability to recognise order in the form of patterns. Recognising and looking for patterns can help extend your understanding of the world around you.

If you think about it everything is connected. Consider the relationship between the mind, body and soul. Without one the other can’t function and what affects one will have a knock on effect with the other. Think about how we relate to nature, the sea and the universe. We are all interelated and our existence is far more greater than ourselves.

6) Believe in Yourself

As I have said in previous blogs, if you think you are, or you think you aren’t - You are probably right. Do you believe you are a creative person? If you think you are then I’m guessing that you are already leading a fairly creative, imaginative existence.

There are so many reasons why you may lack self-belief. The list is endless and the reasons for an individual lacking self-belief are complicated and diverse. We all lose faith in our own abilities at times, even people who seem to have it all. Sometimes it’s easier to just settle. To go with the flow and stay within the realms of average and ordinary. But keep the faith is what we must do. Have faith in our own creative possibilies. We are all capable of so much more than we actually think.

7) Challenge Assumptions and beliefs

Why do things have to be the way they have always been? Is there a better way of doing things? We have a tendency to take things forgranted, and assume that if something has been done a certain way for a long time it must be the right way. This is not necessarily the case. Perhaps it was the right way at the time but things and times move on and do change. We all get stuck in a rut and think that our way is the best way, regardless.

What little routines or habits have you got into perhaps at work or at home?

Everyone has there own set of beiefs. Just like the person whom may beieve they are not creative. We start to think that beliefs are facts. We become so attached to our thoughts that we often start to believe that everything we think is real. It isn’t! Thoughts in actual fact are just simply mental pictures /events in our minds. Think back to how when I discussed how we make associates in our minds. We do the same with belief systems. Something will happen and we look for further examples to confirm our thinking. Before we know it we have created our very own belief system.

Fact - we have control over what we think. We need to start by challenging our assumptions.

8) Follow your hunches and intuition

Gut feelings, dreams and our subconscious can tell us a great deal if we were prepared to listen a little more closely to the information offered to us. The subconscious is constantly processing the endless streams of information it recieves. From the people we meet, past memories, both good and bad and our feelings and thought are constantly filtering inot our subconscious. As new pieces of information are recieved the subconscious makes connections. It has a wealth of knowledge that it gives to us in the form of intuitive feelings that we all have at some time. Some people are more in touch with their intuitive side than others, but we should learn to listen to these hunches as more often than not they are trying to tell us something important. They are often right. The mind is a facinating, complex instrument and we should learn to trust in its ability to be intuitive and perceptive and be a guide through our journey of life!

9) Incubation

As the Poet Doug King states, “We should learn to pause ……or nothing worthwhile will ever catch up with us.”

To let ideas generate we need to give them time to fester, taking shape and form. Let the cogs start turning in our brains and churn the idea over like a cow would chew cud! Someone I read recently said that their best ideas came whilst they were doing the three Bs. In Bed, the Bath or on the Bus.

All good ideas needs to be given the space to be mulled over and begin to germinate. Like a seed that is planted in spring,it needs to be given time, sun and water for it to sprout and push through the earths soil.

Allow the Muse to whisper in your ear - Ask, trust and listen.

10) Lose Control

Sometimes we have to have a little disorder and chaos to “Create”. When baking a cake you near enough always have to break a few eggs! The same can be said for creativity. If you are too rigid and inflexible you won’t be open to possibilities. Not everything is logical. Don’t be afraid to get a little messy and crazy from time to time. Fly by the seat of your pants!

If you have any further suggestions about creativity and how to be more creativity I would certainly love to hear them. In fact I would love to hear from anyone out there. It would be great just to know that someone or something is actually bothering to read my blog. Get Commenting!!!

Ladies and Gentlemen of the class of ’09
If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be
it. The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by
scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable
than my own meandering
experience…I will dispense this advice now. Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth; oh never mind; you will not
understand the power and beauty of your youth until they have faded.

But trust me, in 20 years you’ll look back at photos of yourself and
recall in a way you can’t grasp now how much possibility lay before
you and how fabulous you really looked….You’re not as fat as you
imagine. Don’t worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as
effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing
bubblegum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that
never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm
on some idle Tuesday.

Do one thing everyday that scares you.

Sing

Don’t be reckless with other people’s hearts, don’t put up with
people who are reckless with yours.

Floss

Don’t waste your time on jealousy; sometimes you’re ahead, sometimes
you’re behind…the race is long, and in the end, it’s only with
yourself.

Remember the compliments you receive, forget the insults; if you
succeed in doing this, tell me how. Keep your old love letter’s, throw away your old bank statements. Stretch Don’t feel guilty if you don’t know what you want to do with your life…the most interesting people I know didn’t know at 22 what they
wanted to do with their lives, some of the most interesting 40 year
olds I know still don’t. Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to your knees, you’ll miss them when they’re gone. Maybe you’ll marry, maybe you won’t, maybe you’ll have children, maybe you won’t, maybe you’ll divorce at 40, maybe you’ll dance the funky
chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary…what ever you do, don’t
congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself either – your
choices are half chance, so are everybody else’s.

Enjoy your body,
use it every way you can…don’t be afraid of it, or what other people
think of it, it’s the greatest instrument you’ll ever own.. Dance…even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room. Read the directions, even if you don’t follow them. Do NOT read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly.

Get to know your parent’s, you never know when they’ll be gone for
good. Be nice to your siblings; they are the best link to your past and the
people most likely to stick with you in the future. Understand that friends come and go, but for the precious few you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle because the older you get, the more you need the people you knew when you were young. Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard; live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.

Travel

Accept certain inalienable truths, prices will rise, politicians will
philander, you too will get old, and when you do you’ll fantasize
that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were
noble and children respected their elders.

Respect your elders.

Don’t expect anyone else to support you.

Maybe you have a trust fund,
maybe you have a wealthy spouse; but you never know when either one
might run out. Don’t mess too much with your hair, or by the time you’re 40, it will
look 85. Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who
supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of
fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the
ugly parts and recycling it for more than
it’s worth.

But trust me on the sunscreen…

If I had my life over, I’ld try to make more mistakes next time.

I would relax. I would limber up. I would be sillier than I have been this trip.

I know of very few things I would take more seriously.

I would be crazier. I would be less hygienic. I would take more chances.

I would take more trips. I would climb more mountains.

Swim more rivers and watch more sunsets.

I would eat more icecream and less beans!

I would have more actual troubles and fewer imaginary ones!

You see, I am one of those people who live prophylactically,

And sanely and sensibly, hour after hour and day after day.

Oh I’ve had my moments and, if I had to do it over again, I’ld have more of them.

In fact, I’d try to having nothing else, just moments, one after another,

Instead of living so many years ahead each day.

I have been one of those people who never go anywhere without…

A thermometer; a hot water bottle; a gargle; a raincoat and a parachute.

If I had to do it over again, I would go places and do things and travel

lighter than I have.

If I had my life to live over,

I would start barefoot earlier in the spring,

And stay that way later in the fall.

I would play hookey more.

I wouldn’t make such good grades except by accident.

I would ride more merry-go-rounds.

I’LD PICK MORE DAISIES.

Creativity in society is vastly under-rated and devalued. When in actual fact it is the essence of who we actually and is the starting point for all human endeavours and accomplishments. None of us knows the true extent, of what our minds and imaginations are actually capable of. Most of us are allowing our creative grey matter to die a slow, but certain death. Use it or lose is the old adage. You only have to consider that even the greatest, most imaginatively creative person will only will still use approximately 10% of their actual brain capacity. The rest is dormant, untapped, like a hidden spring.

I am now going to let the writing flow and talk about what “creativity” means to me. Some of it might sound like pretentious clap trap. Some of it probably will be! Certainly I am not basing my stream of conscious thought on any research or clear hard facts. I am just going to let the writing flow and see what comes……

So here goes. Creativity is a flowing, stream of conscious thoughts and ideas. A well of inspiration. It is at the core of who we are, the essence of self-expression and truth. Our own truth. A way in which we explore our conscious worlds, that of which we recognise as “our reality”. It is to question, an acts as a catalyst for challenging assumptions, beliefs and how we see things. But perhaps not how they actually are? Creating and being creative helps us make sense of the world in which we we live, opening our eyes to the limitless opportunities and potential all around which we often fail to notice.

We could be so much more. We already are so much more, we just need to awaken this hidden source.

Through creativity, not only do we make sense of our place in the world, we also explore who we are as individuals. Creativity is not just for the talented, the intelligent of for people who have time on their hands. We all have a latent creativity ability and need in each and every one of us. It is not only artists, musicians and poets who can be creative. You, who ever you are, who is reading this have an inner creative, it just needs a little reigniting. Where’s the kinderling and fire lighters?

Our creativity is limitless. It’s just a question of tapping into the potential. Creativity is not simply something you either have or haven’t. It can be re-learned. We all have the capacity to see a differing viewpoint and be open to the possiblities and difference. Creativity is the rusty key which can unlock our subconconscious, our imaginations. The deepest, and perhaps darkest of our desires and needs. A fresh new way of seeing the world. Like a child opening it’s eyes for the first time, full of wonder and awe. (There I go again with my flowery musings!) It is like opening Pandora’s box on our`dreams and aspirations. Once we tap into our underpooled well the creativity will flow, starting with a slow trickle, until the power of the flow is torrential. An awesome energy field. A force to be reconed with. Like an electrical storm, circuiting in the brain. Tha magic and power of an idea. A forcefield of potential. The moment of clear clarity and inspiration.

We are living creature so let’s create!

“If our endeavours feel a bit amateurish at first, then that’s all for the better. The word amateur comes from the latin amore, meaning “to love”. We embrace the unknown for the love of it”. Julia Cameron The Artist’s Way
